Important News from CCAA: Merger of CCAA and CMC-Canada prepares advisors for the “convergence” in the Agri-food industry

May 17 - CALGARY
Canada’s agri-food sector is significant.  Representing 8.9% of Canada’s GDP, it totaled almost $100 billion in 2009. While the agri-food industry is already global, this trend will increase rapidly in the future.  With $35 billion of exports, Canada is now the world’s fourth-largest exporter.  As the world’s population is projected to grow by two billion people within 20-30 years, six countries are expected to lead the charge to increase production to meet this need.  Canada is one of these countries.

Canada’s opportunity to be a world’s leader in agri-food is significant -- it must prepare to seize this opportunity.  It will require a large investment, both in human and financial terms.  The margins are narrow, mistakes will be costly, but Canada is well positioned to be a leader. Professional advisors to this sector need to know more and broaden their knowledge and skills.

“Narrow focused domains of advice providers to agriculture is no longer sufficient.  Helping a farmer improve production is necessary but to meet the requirements of an additional two billion people, advice must flow through the entire agri-food chain,” emphasized Terry Betker, former President of CCAA and Director of CMC-Canada.

Complicating matters is the convergence between the areas of agriculture, health, the environment, and energy.  The winners in the future agri-food industry will be the players who best understand and manage their interests within the food value chain, both domestically and internationally.

The Canadian Association of Management Consultants (CMC-Canada) and Canadian Consulting Agrologists Association (CCAA) announced in December the two organizations were joining forces to build a more powerful voice for the management consulting industry.  Today, the agreement has been signed to consummate this deal.

“The merger of CCAA and CMC-Canada predicts Canada’s future opportunity and prepares advisors to the agri-food industry, to ensure they will continue to serve as an important catalyst to support Canadian agri-food businesses as opportunities present themselves,” said Glenn Yonemitsu, CEO, CMC-Canada.

Advisors help companies become more productive, effective, efficient and profitable. “CCAA had a membership base that was broadly focused,” Betker continued. “But, we needed more... a larger organization with the critical mass and complementary advisor-based skill sets to meet the current and evolving needs of businesses and organizations directly and indirectly involved in the chain."
